This posting is a laundry list of activity taking place in various clubs around campus. It captures the energy, curiosity, and talent that our students bring to school life outside of the classroom. The breadth of activities and the opportunities for students to learn and lead resonate powerfully with our mission statement: "Our Lady of Good Counsel High School is committed to preparing students with diverse learning abilities for the challenges of life by providing programs and activities that advance academic excellence and service to others; foster spiritual, emotional and social growth; promote inclusion of all community members; and embody the Xaverian values of humility, trust, zeal, compassion, and simplicity upon which the school is founded."

In a stroll around our recent Open House, Director of Auxiliary Programs Lauren Costello learned:

  • The Math team competes in eight small meets at nearby schools (Springbrook, JFK, Blake, Wheaton, Sherwood, Paint Branch). Our team won the October 9 contest, handing the Springbrook team its first loss of the past two years.
  • Students for Life are planning their second annual Pro-Life Leadership Conference for area schools and organizations who support life.
  • Members of the Key Club organized a UNICEF bank drive, will be making sandwiches for food banks in November, and are writing cards to soldiers for Christmas.
  • The It's Academic club participates in the Maryland Beltway League. They are currently undefeated.
  • The Pottery Club is donating pots to The Empty Bowls Project.
  • The Politics and Government Club's early discussion of potential candidates for the 2016 election has Hillary Clinton and Marco Rubio as their top choices.
  • Guitar Club members performed some original material at the recent Coffee House.
  • The Computer Club is currently creating a game and plans to have it finished by spring break.
  • SAVE is working on the community "Lights Out" project.
  • Robotics Club has five groups of three or four people building robots. Each robot is different, and each group builds it however they want depending what they want their robot to do. Every few weeks the robots compete on speed, strength, and the ability to navigate obstacles courses.
  • Hip-hop is working on a new dance.
  • The Black Students Association will host "Soul Food Night" and "So You Think You Can..." again this year.
  • Rugby is trying to recruit some younger players and plans to play in a Sevens tournament this weekend.
  • Broadcasting, having completed the Football season, is working on a winter schedule for filming games.
  • Spectrum is working on an anti-cyberbullying project.
  • Donate Life is educating students and faculty about organ donation.
  • Our new Equestrian Club is participating in Inter School Horse Show competitions and looking to recruit new members for the winter season.

Our students, as always, make us proud. In the growth that comes from pursuit of diverse interests, it is mission, accomplished.
